Dancing for His Glory by Lawrence Darmani

If the reason why I go to church was to watch people dance, I would have joined the Church of Pentecost. I’ve seen a local assembly of the church in jubilation, and boy, you can’t help but admire the scene. The apostles and elders descended from the elevated platform to the open floor below in their suits and black shoes, with handkerchiefs in hand, and moving in a queue as if they had rehearsed the dance.

The Eye of a Needle by Lawrence Darmani

The eye of a needle is smaller than the mouth of a bird. And, although, ironically, the needle’s eye resembles the human eye, when age catches up on us, threading a needle becomes a huge challenge because of how small the eye of the needle is. Yet, we are metaphorically told that there comes a situation when a camel can easily pass through the eye of a needle! To deepen this jaw-dropping wonder, just remember how a camel looks like with its hunchback, oblong head, long mouth, and wobbling legs!

Child Safety at Home by Lawrence Darmani

Two-year-old Cynthia strolled leisurely towards the bucket in the bathroom, carrying her little toy. She dropped the toy into the bucket, which was full of water, and watched it sink to the bottom. Baby Cynthia got fascinated and decided to it again. Her mother was supposed to keep an eye on her, but she was glued to the TV in the hall. To reach her toy, baby Cynthia bent over the bucket. Instantly, her legs lifted, plunging her headlong into the water. By the time she reached the toy, she was gasping for breath, drowning.

Caught in Contempt by Lawrence Darmani

The day a journalist was charged with contempt of court, he had done and said something against a judge. I looked for the meaning of “contempt of court” and found the following: First: “Contempt of court may be said to be any conduct that tends to bring the authority and administration of the law into disrepute. It is an offense against a court of justice or a person to whom the judicial functions of the sovereignty have been delegated.”

A Sign from Above by Lawrence Darmani

One depressing occurrence I observed year after year when I was growing up in the village was the loneliness and sadness one middle-aged woman portrayed during Christmas. The woman, Maame Baabo, had two sons who travelled out of the country one Christmas season to look for greener pastures but who never returned. While some said Maame Baabo’s sons travelled to Nigeria, others believed they went to Libya. But how did this matter to the poor woman? What she knew was that her two sons left home and did not return. And they left during the Christmas season.

A tale of Two Gardens by Lawrence Darmani

My father loved gardens. Everywhere we lived, in the north or in the south of Ghana, he kept a garden in addition to his regular farms; there he raised all kinds of crops for the family and for neighbours. When he retired as a farmer in northern Ghana, he often sat in his backyard garden close to his house for fresh air. One day when I visited him, he said, “Look at this little garden. Do think anything good can come from this garden?” It was in the dry season and, indeed, the handful of crops had been dealt an unpleasant blow by the hot weather, resulting in famished crops with little promise of a yield.
